Raina Voices Concerns Over BCCI's Family Ban on Tours, Emphasizes Player Support

Suresh Raina, the former Indian cricketer, has openly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its policy restricting players from having their families accompany them on overseas tours. Raina believes this decision is unfair and negatively impacts the mental well-being of the athletes.

Earlier this year, following India's Test series defeat to Australia, the BCCI implemented a revised set of guidelines, which included limitations on family presence during international tours. The policy, intended to improve focus and discipline, has faced opposition, with Raina emerging as a prominent voice of dissent.

Raina, in a conversation with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, stated, "It is very important to have family on tours. BCCI has taken a big decision that family is not allowed – I'm against this...family should be allowed. It's not that they (family) are against the players; they (also) would want us to score runs and the country to win."

He highlighted the crucial emotional support that families provide, particularly during challenging periods in a cricketer's career. "You do have mental health issues. When you are going through a lean phase and there's an army gunning for your spot, then such issues crop up. You fear being dropped. When chips are down, you need someone to talk to. When you're happy, you seldom need anyone. But when you're down, you fear talking thinking this may end up reaching the coach or the captain," Raina explained.

Raina further elaborated that players often hesitate to express their mental health struggles due to potential repercussions. "So out of hesitation, players don't speak out," he said.

"Imagine Virat Kohli playing, his daughter clapping – it's such a proud moment. He will set the stage on fire," Raina concluded, emphasizing the positive impact of family presence on morale and performance.
