Patrick Moroney's appointment as the convenor selector for the Proteas men's team has been met with cautious optimism. While the move signals a return to selector panels, a decision that has raised eyebrows, Moroney's credentials and experience offer a glimmer of hope.
Moroney's three-year, full-time contract, effective August 1, places him in a crucial role, reporting to Enoch Nkwe, CSA's director of national teams and high performance, and working closely with head coach Shukri Conrad. This collaboration is viewed as a positive, considering Nkwe's meticulous approach and Conrad's proven competence.
Moroney's background is deeply rooted in South African cricket. He has served as a high school director of sport and marketing, contributed to talent identification programs, and acted as convenor of selectors for the Lions, as well as CSA's academy, emerging, and under-19 teams.
Nkwe emphasized Moroney's extensive experience, stating, "His deep understanding of the game, combined with decades of experience in talent identification and selection across various levels, makes him the ideal person for the job."
Notably, Moroney was part of the last national men's selection panel before it was dissolved in January 2023. Since then, head coaches have had sole responsibility for squad and team selections. The timing of the change raises questions.
Both occurred when the head coaches had final say in selections.
The decision by the CSA board to revert to a selector panel system is questionable, particularly given the recent successes achieved with head coaches having the final say. The board's motives are being scrutinized.
Moroney's appointment is a positive because he is known to support and advocate for South African cricket, unlike others who may prioritize personal agendas. He, along with figures like Nkwe, Conrad, and Eddie Khoza, are instrumental in maintaining the integrity of the sport despite challenges.
While Moroney's appointment is a welcome development, concerns remain about the composition of the full selection panel. Cricbuzz has confirmed that an independent selector will be appointed to join Moroney and Conrad, forming a three-person panel. The board's ability to make the right choice for this final position remains to be seen.
