The International Cricket Council (ICC) has provided USA Cricket (USAC) with a three-month extension to address ongoing governance issues. This decision comes as a hybrid selection model is being developed to determine the teams participating in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
During its meeting in Singapore on Saturday, July 19th, the influential ICC Board resolved to give USAC more time to rectify its governance, which has been under intense scrutiny. The situation has escalated to the point where the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), the paramount Olympic authority in the United States, has also raised concerns.
USAC had been placed on notice by the ICC nearly a year prior, during the ICC's annual conference in July 2024, with a mandate to improve its organizational structure. However, the Normalisation Committee, following its visit to the United States last month, reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the progress achieved.
Under normal circumstances, the ICC might have proceeded to suspend the member nation. However, USAC appears to be benefiting from the unique circumstance of the United States hosting the upcoming Olympic Games. Recognizing the delicate nature of the situation, the Jay Shah-led ICC granted USAC a three-month reprieve. This decision was made by the ICC Board on Saturday, according to attendees at the annual conference in Singapore.
The irony of the situation is not lost on observers. While the US men's and women's teams are anticipated to automatically qualify for the Olympic Games, the selection process for these teams remains a significant challenge for both international and local cricket administrators. It remains uncertain whether USAC – provided it meets the governance requirements within the next three months – will be authorized by the USOPC to select the teams.
Furthermore, the ICC has reportedly decided to implement a hybrid model for the LA28 qualification pathway. This means that some teams will secure qualification based on their ICC T20 rankings, while others will need to participate in a qualifier tournament. India, currently ranked as the No. 1 T20 team, is expected to automatically qualify, regardless of the ranking cut-off date.
The ICC Board also established a working group to formulate recommendations on the structure of all three formats of the game. Detailed information regarding these recommendations is expected to be released on Sunday, the final day of the Singapore conference.
