Shubman Gill narrowly escaped ICC sanctions during the third Test at Lord's. He wore a red vest under his white jersey, violating clothing regulations. Gill quickly buttoned up his shirt, resolving the issue. Earlier, at Headingley, he wore black socks, also against ICC rules. He switched to white socks the next day.

Gill Skirts ICC Code Breach with Quick Thinking

Shubman Gill narrowly averted a potential run-in with the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the third Test at Lord's, thanks to his quick thinking regarding a minor clothing infraction.

Prior to the start of play, during the national anthems, the Indian captain was observed wearing a red vest beneath his white jersey. According to ICC regulations – specifically Article 19.44 of the clothing and equipment code for Test matches – any visible undergarments must be white. Colored vests or undershirts are strictly prohibited.

Fortunately for Gill, he quickly recognized the issue. As the teams prepared for the first session, he discreetly buttoned his shirt to conceal the red vest, effectively rectifying the breach before the match commenced. The ICC maintains strict oversight of these details, and players can face penalties for even seemingly minor violations, particularly if the color is clearly visible.

This isn't the first instance of the young skipper teetering on the edge of a clothing-related violation. During the first Test at Headingley, Gill was spotted wearing black socks, which also contravene the ICC’s clothing standards for Test matches. However, he rectified the error by switching to white socks the following day, thus avoiding any disciplinary measures.

Gill's awareness and swift action prevented a possible sanction from the ICC on both occasions. While these may appear to be minor oversights, the rules are rigorously enforced, especially in the traditional format of the game.
