Rishabh Pant's Batting Position Unchanged Despite Fielding Absence: Here's Why
Rishabh Pant's absence from the field on Day 2 of the third Test against England at Lord's, due to a finger injury sustained while keeping wicket on Day 1, raised questions about his eligibility to bat in his usual position. Despite substitute Dhruv Jurel taking over the wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of England's innings, Pant was indeed permitted to bat at his regular No. 5 spot, a decision fully compliant with the regulations.

According to the ICC's Playing Conditions, a player who is absent from fielding due to injury or illness is permitted to bat in their usual position, provided the reason for their absence is deemed legitimate. In Pant's case, the injury occurred during play and was verified by the team physio, thus satisfying the criteria.
This contrasts with scenarios where players deliberately avoid fielding for tactical advantages. In such instances, the player may face restrictions on their batting order and may only be allowed to bat after a specified number of overs.
Pant's situation fell under the "injury or external blow" clause, affording him full flexibility in his batting position.
Pant's return to bat at No. 5 proved to be a significant advantage for India, particularly after the team had lost three wickets for just 65 runs in response to England's 387. Together with KL Rahul, he stabilized the innings through a solid partnership. While Rahul maintained composure, Pant injected dynamism into the game.
His absence from fielding did not affect his eligibility to bat, a factor that ultimately proved decisive for India.
