The iconic Lord's Cricket Ground was awash in a sea of red on Friday, as spectators, players, and staff came together for the seventh annual #RedForRuth campaign. This powerful initiative supports the Ruth Strauss Foundation (RSF) and honors the memory of Ruth Strauss, the late wife of former England captain Sir Andrew Strauss.
The #RedForRuth campaign has become a beloved tradition in the cricket world. On the second day of the third Test between England and India, thousands donned red attire to demonstrate their support for the Foundation's crucial work.
Attendees were encouraged to arrive early and participate in a special opening ceremony held before the first ball. Volunteers offered #RedForRuth bucket hats and Ruth Roses in exchange for donations, further boosting the fundraising efforts.
The initiative serves as a powerful display of unity within the cricketing community, providing solace and support to families grappling with the terminal illness of a parent.
Over the past six years, the generosity of fans has enabled the Foundation to assist over 3,500 family members navigating grief and to train more than 1,000 cancer care professionals in bereavement support. The impact of the RSF's work is both far-reaching and deeply personal, providing vital assistance during life's most challenging moments.
All proceeds from the day's events will directly support the RSF's mission to help families navigate the complexities of grief and loss.
On the field, England resumed their innings from an overnight score of 251/4, with Joe Root poised to achieve his 37th Test century. Captain Ben Stokes, having overcome groin concerns, joined him at the crease.
