Concerns have arisen for both England and India as key players Ben Stokes and Rishabh Pant sustained injuries during the first day of the third Test match at Lord's on July 10, 2025.
England concluded the day with a score of 251/4, with Joe Root displaying remarkable form, remaining unbeaten at 99, and Stokes contributing 39 runs. However, India faced a setback as Pant was compelled to leave the field due to a finger injury.
Stokes visibly struggled with a groin issue while batting. He received medical attention on the field, and his discomfort was evident as he ran between the wickets during his partnership with Root.
The England team is optimistic about their captain's recovery. Teammate Ollie Pope expressed hope that Stokes would regain his strength soon.
"Fingers crossed he can do something magic and come back strong," Pope commented. "I've not seen him since, so fingers crossed there's nothing too serious. But clearly we've got a big Test over the next four days and we've got a big two (at Old Trafford and The Oval) coming up as well, so it is important to try and manage him."
On the other side, India encountered their own challenge when Rishabh Pant suffered a finger injury while keeping wickets. The incident occurred as he attempted to stop a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that veered down the leg side.
Despite initial impressions suggesting a minor injury, Pant was ultimately unable to continue and had to leave the field after treatment. Dhruv Jurel took over the wicketkeeping responsibilities.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acknowledged the injury through their social media channels but did not elaborate on its severity.
The BCCI's official statement read: "Update: #TeamIndia vice-captain Rishabh Pant got hit on his left index finger. He is receiving treatment at the moment and under the supervision of the medical team. Dhruv Jurel is currently keeping wickets in Rishabh's absence."
During the post-day press conference, Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was unable to provide further details regarding Pant's condition.
"To be honest I just came off the field and I don't know anything about it," Reddy stated. "I haven't heard anything, but we will hear more tomorrow morning before we go back."
The injuries sustained by both Stokes and Pant could significantly impact the outcome of the Test match. Both teams are awaiting comprehensive assessments of their players' conditions.
England showcased resilience on the first day, with Root and Stokes stabilizing the innings after early breakthroughs by the Indian bowlers. Despite his injury, Stokes remained at the crease alongside Root, forging an unbroken partnership.
The extent of these injuries and the players' availability will be pivotal factors as the Test progresses at Lord's. Both teams are hoping for positive updates regarding their key players.
This series remains vital for both teams, with upcoming matches scheduled at Old Trafford and The Oval following the Lord's Test match.
