Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed coach of the Indian national cricket team, has voiced his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) policy regarding family visits during tournaments. This comes after Virat Kohli expressed his reservations about the restrictions.
The BCCI implemented this rule following India's 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The new guidelines limit family stays to 14 days for tours lasting 45 days or more, and seven days for shorter tours. The decision aims to ensure players maintain focus during international cricket engagements.
Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli are seen here in a deep conversation regarding the new BCCI family rule.
Kohli had previously stated his discomfort with the prospect of returning to his room alone, without his family present.
During an interview with Cheteshwar Pujara, Gambhir emphasized the importance of prioritizing the nation's representation over personal comforts.
"Families are important, but you've got to understand one thing. You are here for a purpose. It's not a holiday. You're here for a huge purpose. You've got very few people in that dressing room or in this tour that gets this opportunity to make the country proud. So yes, I'm not against not having families with us." Gambhir said.
He acknowledged the value of family support but reiterated that representing the country should be the primary objective.
"It is important to have families, but if your focus is towards making our country proud and you have a much bigger role than any other thing, and you're committed to that goal, you're committed to that cause, I think everything else is fine. But for me, I think that cause and that goal is more important than any other thing." He added.
Gambhir also revealed his constant engagement with team strategies, even immediately after a victory. "Honestly, when we won the last test match, the moment we won the last test match, the first thing that came in my mind was that what is going to be the combination for the next Test?"
The BCCI's family rule marks a significant shift in how the Indian cricket team manages player-family interactions during tours. While some players, like Kohli, have expressed concerns, the team management, under Gambhir, believes that professional commitments should take precedence.
