A heated exchange between Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and The Oval's head groundsman, Lee Fortis, marred India's first practice session ahead of the crucial fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
The altercation reportedly arose from a disagreement regarding the Indian team's use of the practice square. Witnesses observed a visibly upset Gambhir gesturing emphatically and raising his voice, while Fortis voiced his objections to the placement of equipment on the square.
Assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak provided context, explaining that unease had begun earlier that day during the team's customary pitch inspection. According to Kotak, a member of the ground staff requested the coaches to maintain a distance of at least 2.5 meters from the pitch, which they found unusual. "We felt a little awkward," Kotak stated, emphasizing that the coaches were appropriately dressed and simply observing the pitch ahead of the five-day Test.
Kotak elaborated on the established protocol, noting that curators typically share information about pitch preparations, including grass cutting schedules. He contrasted this with the perceived dismissiveness of the request.
The situation escalated when support staff brought a 'cooling box' onto the square during practice. Fortis, who was seated on a roller, allegedly shouted at the staff, provoking a strong response from Gambhir.
Kotak defended Gambhir's actions, asserting that he was standing up for his staff. He also suggested that other visiting teams had encountered similar issues at the ground.
Adding another layer to the narrative, Kotak revealed that the team was aware of the curator's reputation for being difficult to work with prior to arriving at The Oval.
Cricbuzz understands that Fortis' concerns stemmed from the extensive cricket schedule remaining at The Oval, including domestic matches and The Hundred tournament. He was worried about potential damage to the square, particularly from players sliding to prevent runs or dismissals.
