MANCHESTER – Following a captivating Day 4 in the fourth Test match, the conspicuous absence of England captain Ben Stokes from the bowling attack has ignited considerable discussion. Former England batsman Jonathan Trott suggests that medical considerations might be the primary reason behind this decision.

Stokes, who displayed visible discomfort in his leg on Day 3, made a remarkable comeback with the bat, achieving his first Test century in over two years. His impressive innings of 141 runs from 198 balls significantly contributed to England's substantial total of 669 runs in response to India's 358.

Despite his renowned all-rounder capabilities and his typical inclination to take charge during critical moments, Stokes did not bowl on Day 4. During this time, India mounted a recovery from a precarious 0/2 to reach 174/2, fueled by a resilient unbroken partnership between KL Rahul (87) and Shubman Gill (78).

Trott, speaking on JioStar’s Match Centre Live, commented: “I’m not sure Ben Stokes is the kind of character who lets a partnership build without intervening. If it were up to him, I believe he would have grabbed the ball much earlier — just to see how he felt.”

Trott emphasized Stokes’ innate desire to influence the game, stating: “Stokes is a ‘today, right now’ kind of cricketer. So yes, it’s possible he’s being wrapped in cotton wool — maybe on doctor’s advice.

But honestly, if he could bowl, we would have already seen him in action today.”

Stokes has a documented history of hamstring and back injuries. With the crucial Ashes tour to Australia on the horizon, England’s management may be exercising caution, even though Stokes leads England's wicket-takers in this series with 16 wickets, including a five-wicket haul.

India, still trailing by 137 runs, will commence Day 5 with aspirations of securing a draw. All eyes will be on whether Stokes ultimately decides to bowl.
