Shubman Gill is currently scripting history in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. His current form places him on the verge of breaking several long-standing records held by the legendary Don Bradman, as well as potentially surpassing milestones set by Indian greats Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.
Shubman Gill eyeing major records in the ongoing Test series.
Gill's magnificent performance at Edgbaston, where he registered scores of 269 and 161, not only helped India level the five-match series but also saw him shatter numerous records. These include eclipsing Virat Kohli's highest score as Indian captain and surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test match. Furthermore, he achieved the distinction of becoming the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).
With three Tests still to play, Gill needs just 225 runs to break Bradman's record of 810 runs scored as captain in a series, a record established during the 1936-37 Ashes.
He is also within striking distance of Bradman's all-time record of 974 runs in a single series. To achieve this monumental feat, Gill requires another 390 runs.
Moreover, he has the opportunity to become the fastest to reach 1000 Test runs as captain. He needs 415 runs in his next six innings to surpass Bradman's record of reaching this milestone in 11 innings.
Gill's current form has seen him score three centuries in the first two Tests. He is now behind West Indies legend Clyde Walcott, who holds the record for the most centuries in a series with five, scored against Australia in 1955. While Walcott remains the sole holder of this record, Gill has the potential to equal or even surpass him. Bradman's best as captain was four centuries in a series, achieved against India in 1947, a record Gill is only two centuries away from matching.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar voiced his optimism regarding Gill's chances, stating, "I hope he does that... He is in great form, and he should do it, that's what I feel."
The young captain is also on the verge of breaking several Indian records.
What makes Gill's current performance even more remarkable is that he is outpacing Bradman's start in the 1930 series, having amassed 585 runs compared to Bradman's 394 in the first two Tests. This incredible form suggests that he could continue his record-breaking spree in the remaining three matches.
