Shubman Gill's decision to exclude Kuldeep Yadav from the Edgbaston Test raised eyebrows. "We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so we decided to add some depth to the batting," Gill explained.
Kuldeep Yadav, who made a return to the Test format after the home series against New Zealand last October, was sidelined during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to injury. Despite a well-deserved call-up for the England tour, he remained on the bench at both Headingley and Edgbaston.
During these matches, Kuldeep's role was limited to delivering drinks, conveying messages from head coach Gautam Gambhir, participating in team huddles, and applauding his teammates' achievements.
Notably, Kuldeep has taken 21 wickets against England in his 13 Tests, showcasing his ability to trouble the English batting lineup.
Kapil Dev Pandey, Kuldeep's childhood coach, believes that the outcome at Headingley could have been different if Kuldeep had been included in the playing XI. He emphasized that the wrist-spinner, combined with Jasprit Bumrah's pace, would have created a formidable bowling attack.
"I just don’t understand why Kuldeep didn’t play...But Kuldeep is a wrist-spinner who has troubled England and Australia overseas. Shouldn’t he have been there? Or should he now be sent back to domestic cricket and asked to open the batting? That’s unfair, right?" Kapil Dev Pandey stated in an interview with TimesofIndia.com.
He further added, "Deep down, the management has doubts about him, which is why they haven’t played him yet...As a coach, I’d say Kuldeep is essential for the country. Even if the batters score centuries, if we lose the match, it’s all in vain. Kuldeep should play at Lord's."
Pandey countered Gill's statement by saying, "Look at his Test record—he’s scored runs against Bangladesh and other decent teams...England’s spinners are getting wickets here, and that should tell us something... Kuldeep and Bumrah would have been a lethal combination in the first Test."
Sunil Joshi, former India left-arm spinner, holds a different view, suggesting that batting depth has become a key consideration in modern cricket. He believes that captains often prioritize this aspect when selecting their XI, which could explain why Washington Sundar was chosen over Kuldeep.
"In today’s game, a bowler needs to be three-dimensional. If he can chip in with 10–15 runs, it strengthens his case for being in the XI," Joshi told TimesofIndia.com.
Joshi also stated, "Traditionally, England have struggled against wrist-spinners, so even I was hoping Kuldeep would play...England must be very happy Kuldeep is not playing."
With Jasprit Bumrah's expected return for the third Test at Lord's, Prasidh Krishna might be the one to make way.
The central question remains: Will Shubman Gill finally include Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI, or will he once again prioritize batting depth, leaving the spinner waiting for his opportunity? The decision will be telling.
