India marks National Sports Day on August 29, which also marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. This year, the day is made even more special with the start of the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 in the historic city of Rajgir, Bihar, bringing together top teams from across the continent. Best wishes have been extended to all players, officials, and supporters as the tournament gets underway.
National Sports Day is observed every year on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. Known as the "Hockey Wizard of India," Dhyan Chand led the country to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, leaving an indelible mark on world hockey. In 2012, his birthday was officially declared National Sports Day to honour his contributions.
The observance serves multiple purposes: paying tribute to Dhyan Chand and other sporting icons, promoting sports and fitness as a way of life, and recognising athletes and coaches through the National Sports Awards.
On this day, the President of India confers prestigious honours, including the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award, the Dronacharya Award, and the Dhyan Chand Award.
Schools, universities, and sports institutions organise tournaments, awareness drives, and fitness events, while government initiatives such as the Fit India Movement encourage citizens to embrace active lifestyles.
While Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy remains the centerpiece of the day, it also shines a spotlight on India’s achievements across sports. From Sachin Tendulkar in cricket and PT Usha in athletics to modern-day icons such as Mary Kom, PV Sindhu, and Neeraj Chopra, the occasion celebrates India’s growing impact on the global sporting stage.
At a time when sedentary habits are on the rise, National Sports Day is more than just a commemoration. It serves as a reminder of the role of sports in fostering fitness, teamwork, discipline, and national pride. With the Hockey Asia Cup 2025 beginning on the same day, the message of Dhyan Chand’s legacy finds a fitting resonance.
