England fast bowler Jamie Overton has decided to take an indefinite break from first-class cricket, including Tests, to focus on his white-ball career. Despite returning to the Test fold after a three-year absence during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in July, Overton has chosen to shift his attention away from red-ball cricket.
The Surrey all-rounder made the announcement on Monday, 1 September, a day after The Hundred final, in which he played for London Spirit against eventual champions Oval Invincibles.
According to England team management, Overton had been in contention for the upcoming Ashes Test series, starting on 21 November in Perth. England will need a strong and healthy fast-bowling unit, given the workload and intensity of what promises to be a high-octane five-match series.
Overton explained his decision, saying he can no longer commit fully to all three formats of the game, both physically and mentally.
"Red-ball, first-class cricket has provided the foundation for my professional career and has been the gateway to every opportunity I’ve had in the game so far. It’s where I learnt the game, and it fuelled the goals and ambitions that have driven me for so long. However, at this stage of my career, with the demands of cricket across a 12-month calendar, it’s no longer possible to commit fully to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally," he said in a statement.
"Going forward, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will continue to give everything to play at the highest level for as long as I can," he added.
Overton made his Test debut in 2022 against New Zealand in Leeds and had to wait three more years for his second appearance. He played against India in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, struggling to contain the flow of runs and conceding more than four runs per over in both innings, finishing with two wickets.
However, Overton has been one of Surrey’s finest servants in domestic first-class cricket. The fast bowler has featured in 97 domestic matches, taking 235 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) director Rob Key admitted that Overton’s decision came as a surprise ahead of the Ashes.
"Jamie’s news came unexpectedly, and it is sad to see, as he would have been part of our red-ball plans for the foreseeable future. That said, it serves as a reminder of the cricketing landscape we now operate in. We respect his decision and are grateful to him for informing us when he did," Key said.
Overton has been a globetrotter in T20 cricket. He played for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 and has also featured in the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and ILT20. In the 2025 season, he played six matches for London Spirit, taking eight wickets.
Overton has represented England in 12 T20Is and six ODIs, with his last appearances in both formats coming in 2025.
